How to Set Up Spotify for Artists (Gamechanger for Indie Artists)
Look, as an independent artist who’s been grinding for years, I know the difference between just dropping music and moving smart. One of the biggest tools that helped me level up both visually and strategically is Spotify for Artists.
It’s not just a backend. It’s your digital HQ on one of the biggest platforms in the world. If you’re trying to get serious with your music, here’s how to set it up and why it matters.
What Is Spotify for Artists?
Spotify for Artists is a free tool that gives you full control over your artist profile on Spotify. You can:
Customize your artist page
Upload your bio and press photos
Track your streams and fan data
Pitch your songs to official Spotify playlists
See where your fans are and what they love
I use it before and after every release it’s essential.
Step by Step: How to Set It Up
1. Release Your Music (Through a Distributor)
Before anything, your music needs to be live (or scheduled for release) on Spotify. That means you need a distributor. I’ve used DistroKid, but there’s also:
TuneCore
CD Baby
UnitedMasters
Amuse
AWAL
Make sure your artist name, track titles, and artwork are all on point this info shows up everywhere.
2. Go to artists.spotify.com
Click “Get Access”Then choose Artist or Manager (whichever fits you best)
Log in using your Spotify account (your personal one or one just for your music)
3. Claim Your Profile
Search for your artist name exactly as it shows on Spotify. If your music is already live, your profile will come up.
Spotify will ask for some info to prove it’s you:
Social media accounts (Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
Your distributor name
Email linked to your music uploads
Once verified, you’re in.
4. Customize Everything
Now comes the branding side. Here’s what you can (and should) update:
Profile photo
Header banner image
Artist bio (tell your story make it you)
Social links
“Artist’s Pick” pin a song, playlist, or even a show date to the top of your profile
This is your home base. Make it reflect your vibe.
5. Use the Data (It’s Powerful)
You now have access to real stats:
Where your listeners are
Age/gender breakdown
Which playlists are driving streams
Who’s following you
What tracks are climbing
I check mine regularly to plan releases, drops, and even merch. The data never lies.
Pitch to Spotify Editorial Playlists
You can pitch upcoming tracks to Spotify’s editorial team (yes, the ones who run playlists like RapCaviar, Fresh Finds, and more).
Here’s how:
Go to the Music tab
Click Upcoming
Choose the unreleased song
Fill out the pitch form: genre, vibe, instruments, and a short story about the track
Must be at least 7 days before release. That also ensures your song hits Release Radar for your followers.
Pro Tips from Me (Tiger Backwoods)
These are things I’ve learned by doing not just reading:
Keep your bio updated. Mention collabs, tours, major milestones.
Use “Artist’s Pick” smart. I use it to push a new drop, but sometimes I highlight a playlist I’m featured in.
Drop consistently. Spotify’s algorithm loves activity. Even if it’s a feature or a remix, keep that page active.
Watch your city stats. That’s how I chose my first show locations. I knew who was really listening.
Use the canvas feature. Looping videos that show with your track super engaging.
Why It Matters
Spotify for Artists is one of the most powerful free tools we’ve got as independent artists.
It gives you:
Control
Insights
Tools to grow
Opportunities for playlists & exposure
Don’t leave your artist profile on autopilot. Take the wheel.
Final Words
I’m still building my career brick by brick. But this platform helped me get Power, Empire, and other projects in front of the right ears. You gotta give your music its best shot, and this is a key piece of that.
